Back in the last millenium, we had a hankering to get our fingernails dirty and tell the Man to shove it, so we purchased some acreage out in the woods with the idea of living a modicum of an independent life.

What To Do With a Sustainable Home in a Not-So-Sustainable Location?
How Does a Commitment to Sustainability Lead to a Ride on a Carnival Cruise Boat?
One thing we've always found rewarding is the idea of the creative constraint. For our book, we stated our goal, that is, to wean our house off of fossil fuels, even though the path there was far from obvious, and perhaps, we didn't know, not even in the realm of the possible. The important thing to remember is that failure is, in fact, an option, albeit not the desired outcome.
The Book Tour Ends - Sustainable Cities
Well, we made it back from our book tour and the house hadn't burned down and the garden wasn't shriveled up and our dog was alive so everything's hunky-dory. We had a lot of fun and it was nice to take a break from our own burg and see what's going on in the rest of the country.
Riding the Zephyr
So right now I'm sitting on the California Zephyr in our “sleepette” typing on my mini-computer, with a glorious view out on the Nevada desert sunrise. I had never heard of a sleepette before this trip, but they are AWESOME!

The First Few Stops
Well, Pittsburgh didn't do so well so far as getting me around. Many of the bus lines don't run on Sunday, so I was stuck bumming a ride from the bookstore. In Cleveland, the train shows up at the Amtrak station at about 3:30am, and while there is a light rail train that goes right by there, it doesn't run from 2am-5am. Go figure! So I had to have my brother Jonathan pick me up there, too. Chicago and Milwaukee have been better, but I've also been traveling in those places in the middle of the day.
Getting There is Half the Fun...
...or at least it should be. Venturing out on our book tour, all the way to Californy and back, has of course got me thinking about the state of public transportation in our country. Our trip will be mostly by rail, with a few bus trips to connect the dots, and getting around each city as best we can by local bus systems.
